The National Day of Jamaica is well known in the Caribbean. Jamaica celebrates the national day or day of independence on the 6th August each year. This is a public holiday and it is to celebrate. This as well as mark the country’s independence from the United Kingdom. This occured in 1962.
National Day of Jamaica
The country is one of the oldest colonies of the United Kingdom. It had been a British colony for more than 300 years before the country gained its independence. The leaders for independence for Jamaica has been such figures as Marcus Garvey, Norman Manley as well as Alexander Bustamante. Marcus Garvey was a well known figure who was born on the 17th August 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay Jamaica. He was a well known Jamaican political activist and started the Universal Negro Improvement Association in 1914, which aimed to promote unity as well as self-determination. He died on the 10th June 1940 in London.
Alexander Bustamante who became Sir Alexander Bustamante was the first Prime Minister of Jamaica on the 6th August 1962. He was born on the 24th February in Hanover Jamaica. He founded the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in 1943. This was one of the two major political parties in Jamaica. He died on the 6th August 1977 in Kingston, Jamaica.
The National Day of Jamaica much like in other countries is a public holiday. It is celebrated each year with parades, fireworks as well as other cultural events. The independance day is important for all Jamaicans to reflect on their history as well as their struggles against colonialism as a nation.
