The Maldives celebrates its National Day annually on the 26th July. This day marks the country’s independence from British rule in 1965. The history of their independence comes with an interesting history from a British protectorate to an independent country.
National Day in Maldives
Firstly in the 1950’s the path for the Maldives started. At that time the country was still a British protectorate. They pushed for greater self-governance. In 1953, the Maldivian people submitted a request for greater autonomy to the British government. However, the British government rejected this request, citing concerns over the country’s ability to govern itself.
In 1959, a political movement called the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was established, advocating for greater political freedom and autonomy from the British. The MDP was eventually successful in securing a new constitution in 1960, which allowed for the establishment of a fully elected parliament.
Then in 1963, the Maldives was granted full internal self-government, and negotiations began between the Maldives and the British over the country’s future status. On July 26th, 1965, the Maldives officially gained independence from British rule and became a republic.
Since then, the Maldives has grown and developed as a nation, with a strong focus on tourism and sustainable development.
