National Day of Honduras
As you know the National Day of Honduras is celebrated on the 15th September. Their National Independence Day celebrates their separation or independence from Spain. This occurred on the 15th September 1821. As you will know that much like other countries in South America, Honduras was a Spanish colony for several centuries before gaining its independence.
Firstly there had been a number of leaders who brought this about. The most famous is Francisco Morazán, who went on to become the President of the Federal Republic of Central America. You can find more information on him under the National Day of Nicaragua on here. Many of these South American countries share heros as they are all very closely linked.
So on the 15th September, the representatives from Central America’s various provinces signed the Act of Independence of Central America. This declared the region’s independence from Spain. This event is celebrated in Honduras and other Central American countries as the beginning of their independence. Finally you can also see the National Day of Guatemala as well as the National Day of El Salvador. You will notice how they are all linked to their freedom.
Today the national day of Honduras is celebrated as a public holiday.
